December's Message

When I get a letter, I first look for a signature. If there isn’t one, I throw it away without reading it. I feel strongly that people need to speak up for themselves and take responsibility for their comments so that real conversation can occur, not one-way communication in which dialogue is not possible. Hiding behind anonymity does not foster the open, healthy, trusting, and reciprocal relationships that grown up life requires.

One of my favorite Bible passages this time of the year is Hebrews 1:1 (NRSV): “Long ago God spoke to our ancestors in many and various ways by the prophets, but in these last days [God] has spoken to us by a Son….”

God’s speaking to us by a Son two millennia ago is an example of clear and direct communication. The virgin birth, angels, wise men, and star all say that this Baby is different. His origin is plainly divine. God’s message in the birth of Jesus is as simple as it lovely: “I’m so crazy about you that I’m willing to send my one and only Son to live as one of you, no matter the cost.” If Baby Jesus came with a tag, it would say, “Made in heaven just for you.” Nothing anonymous about this message!

The Christmas story also suggests that God wanted two-way communication with human beings, for after the Son is born, the shepherds respond by “glorifying and praising God for all they hadseen and heard….” (Luke 2:20, NRSV). On Christmas, God’s love letter arrives (signed!). But how will we response? If we reply at all, will we be bold to put our name on it? Will our lives be changed so much by Jesus that we’ll shout our joy so loud that the whole world will know who’s shouting?

We, the “still-speaking church,” believe that God has spoken and is still speaking today. As important as that is, our reply is also important. What’s your reply to God’s Christmas letter? I hope you’ll respond to Baby Jesus with a faith that is so strong and confident that you won’t be afraid or ashamed to put your name on

it.

Peace,

Jeffrey
