Sunday School
We have been learning about different parables this summer. What fun we have been having! My last day of working as Sunday School Superintendent will be on Sunday, August 15. I have had a wonderful time teaching your children this year, and they have learned a lot while we all had a good time together. We acted, danced, sang songs, painted, colored, crafted, cooked, prayed, read, challenged each other, played games, and grown together in Christ.
I would like to share some funny things that happened during Sunday School this year. I love seeing life through a child’s eyes!
We were learning to define sin in class, good things verses bad things. One of the bad things was cutting in line. That’s something all the children could understand. Sunday School ended, and the children went upstairs with their families for coffee hour. They were standing in line waiting their turn when another church member asked if he could cut in line to be with his wife. “Of course,” was the answer from this child’s parent. The child then proceeded to point and call the man a sinner. “Sinner! Sinner!” See, the man cut in line. Needless to say, the parents were just a tad embarrassed.
The children were upstairs for the children’s sermon, and putting the food pantry donations on the altar. They listened to the sermon, and then headed downstairs for our first lesson on communion. When asked what they knew about communion, one child proudly stood up and said, “Communion is food, like what we just put on the altar. It is macaroni and cheese, soup, corn, and vegetables.”
I could go on and on. The children have been wonderful. They are really a great group of kids. This year we concentrated on learning different Bible stories, and over this summer we will continue learning about different parables. Beginning in September, they will learn all about worship. Each month will focus on a different area of worship. The children will begin with a lesson on what worship is before learning the different things that happen during worship. I think this will be a great opportunity for them to understand what happens during the year in worship. We had a couple of worship services downstairs in Sunday School this year where the children were able to stop the service and ask a question about what was happening. I think it was very empowering for them, and I think this curriculum next year will really give them an opportunity to continue to ask those questions they cannot ask when we are in worship upstairs together.
Sunday School for next year begins on September 19. I will lead the teacher training for this up-coming year since our curriculum and structure is a little different than it has been in the past. I want to ensure that I leave you on solid ground, ready to take off for the year. The teacher training will be after church on Sunday, September 19.
I will miss the kids dearly next year, but I am confident that whoever takes over will have a wonderful time with this great set of kids. They have been such a blessing and have really touched my heart deeply. Thank you for giving me this opportunity to learn and grow with your children. I’ve had a blast!
